Although the site is best known as the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, all 300 years of Alamo history are vital to our story. Make sure to ask for the basement tour...

Sea Island Shrimp House

Why visit:

Sea Island didn’t become the best seafood restaurant in San Antonio overnight! Our roots in this city date all the way back to 1912, when Tom Anthony opened the iconic Manhattan Café in downtown San Antonio. When Tom’s son, Dan, took over the thriving restaurant, he still had his heart set on opening his own steakhouse. But, Dan had a special talent for preparing exquisite seafood dishes and Manhattan Café regular and old family friend, Henry Reed, convinced him that what San Antonio really needed a good seafood restaurant. In 1965, Dan Anthony, his wife Chrissy, and Henry Reed opened the first Sea Island Shrimp House on Rector St. behind North Star Mall. The restaurant soon became one of the most well-known seafood restaurants in San Antonio. Today, Sea Island has six locations in San Antonio and opened the New Braunfels location in 2016.  No other seafood restaurant in South Texas can offer the same high quality, meticulously prepared seafood at such a great value!  T

Perico's Mexican Cuisine

Why visit:

The Pericos Family Pericos Mexican Cuisine was derived from Panchito’s Mexican Restaurants. The owners of Panchito’s, Roy and Evelyn Reyes, opened their first restaurant in 1980 on the Southwest side of San Antonio. With hard work and dedication, the two successfully developed Panchito’s into what it is today. Evelyn’s parents, Frank and Lupe Sepulveda, helped the two get the business off and running. And, throughout the years, Roy’s parents, Santos and Aurora Reyes, have been very helpful and supportive with their business ventures. As can be seen, the restaurants are known for being very family-oriented and plan on continuing the same tradition. There are three Pericos locations in San Antonio. They are owned and operated by Roy and Evelyn’s son, Russell Reyes. Pericos, using the same family recipes, offers true authentic Mexican food while providing a magnificently multi-colored parrot theme throughout the restaurant.

Longhorn Cafe

Why visit:

The Longhorn Café started out as a small taco stand on Blanco road around the 1950’s. Originally, around 1980, it was purchased by a Texas Aggie and an Oklahoma Sooner who turned it into a local burger joint, and on a lark, named it Longhorn Café and painted the sign maroon. In 1995, it was purchased by Paul Weir and David Wynn of San Antonio, Texas. They saw the potential. In 2002, the expansion began, adding the Leon Springs store. Today, we are six locations strong; four in San Antonio, one in New Braunfels, and one in Boerne, TX. Longhorn Café is proud to be a local favorite for some of the best down-home cookin’ around. From our Big Juicy™ burgers, fresh cut and battered onion rings, giant-size fried mushrooms, Texas-style Chicken Fried Steak, to our crisp and hearty salads, there is something for everyone! We attribute success to quality food, ample portions, great service, and fair prices. Our beef is fresh, never frozen; we cut our own produce and hand batter and bre

Those Character Traits have defined and continue to define the best Men and Women in Law Enforcement as well as all those who value character, ethics and good citizenship in our communities.  From this simple beginning a singular vision, mission and extraordinary effort is being realized as the Texas Rangers Heritage Center. Whataburger

Why visit:

Since 1950, Whataburger has proudly served a bigger, better burger. It all started when a young entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson had a bold idea: to serve a burger so big that it took two hands to hold, and so good that after a single bite customers couldn't help but exclaim, “What a burger!” He named his humble burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas, “Whataburger.” Over six decades later, we're still family owned and operated. Each and every Whataburger® is still made to order. We still use 100% pure beef and serve it on a big, toasted five-inch bun. And now, as we proudly serve burgers, chicken, salads and breakfast at more than 800 Whataburger locations across the country, that first burger stand is still close to our hearts.

McAllister Park

Why visit:

McAllister Park is comprised of 976 acres on the north side of San Antonio between Jones Maltsberger and Wetmore Roads. The park’s original 713 acres were purchased and developed using 1964 Bond funds and a Federal Open Space grant. When the park officially opened on April 13, 1968, it contained four miles of trails, 125 picnic units, restrooms and parking areas. Originally called Northeast Preserve, it was renamed in June 1974 in honor of former San Antonio Mayor Walter W. McAllister. Since the park’s opening, acreage has been added, including two large tracts—117 acres in 1974 for a Natural Resource Conservation Service floodwater retention structure in the upper Salado Creek watershed, and 130 acres of airport property made available through a joint-use agreement with the San Antonio Aviation Department in 2000. Construction of the flood retention structure was completed in 2003. The San Antonio Road Runners and Harmony Hills Optimist Club have helped construct park improv

B&D Ice House

Why visit:

B&D Ice House at 1004 South Alamo has been a Southtown institution since 1961. In 2010, owner Bruno D’Zanski who worked and kept bar at B&D for 50 years stopped daily operation. Situated across from Southtown’s The Friendly Spot Ice House, Bruno befriended Friendly Spot Bearded Bossman Steve Newman. Their friendship inspired Steve to reimagine B&D Ice with the same soul that it had operated with for the last 50 years. Steve asked brothers Chef Jason Dady and Jake Dady of Jason Dady Restaurant Group to head down to Southtown and brainstorm for the historic Ice House. Steve, Jake and Jason created a Texas themed BBQ and Draft concept worthy of Bruno’s bar. B&D means “Beard & Dady”, “BBQ & Draft” and so much more to these Two Bros. and the Beard. “ To keep the soul of B&D intact and take this Southtown icon into it’s next 50 years is a privilege. To do it with amazing operators like Jason and Jake is taking B&D to the next level” says Steve Newman, Bearded Bossman (

Fish City Grill

Why visit:

Friendly Folks Serious Seafood! Let’s start at the beginning. The original neighborhood joint was opened in April of 1994 in Snider Plaza, Dallas. It was not a seafood restaurant, but a coffee bar called Michele’s Coffee Bar and Café. Bill Bayne was a regular breakfast customer at this little coffee shop in Snider Plaza. He thought the place would make a great oyster bar and asked the owner if he would be willing to sell the restaurant. Instead they joined forces and began planning the conversion of Michele’s Coffee Bar into Shell’s Oyster Bar. Shell’s Oyster Bar and Grill opened on November 1, 1995 with a simple menu of shrimp, catfish and oysters. It was an instant hit! Bill and his partner were soon planning to expand the operation and the menu with a second location in Colleyville and a third in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas. With Shells growing so quickly and successfully they began to get noticed. One company that noticed them was Shells out of Florida. Shells insi

Mangos

Why visit:

MANGOS has been a dream for store owners: Jaime and Susy Perez; since moving from Guadalajara, Mexico into the United States in 1985, they had a vision that some day they would have their own fruit and ice cream shop. They thought of a place where people could cool down from those hot summer afternoons in San Antonio with a traditional raspa, a delicious mangonada or just a plain ice cream bar. A place where people could have a healthy option for their every day lunch menu with a refreshing fruit cup or a savoring corn in a cup, or where families together could enjoy one of those all American favorites like nachos, hot dogs and milk shakes. Today, this dream has come true and we believe in giving you the best. Because of this, we pride ourselves on having fresh, local ingredients every day. We like to think of our food as every day comfort food. You know, the kind your mom would have made (if she were to spoil you every day).

Why visit:

In the Alamo City, the restaurant is located in the former space for Fonda Argentina, to the rear of the Northwoods Shopping Center. Décor is plain, but the restaurant is spacious and clean, giving the spot a casual and inviting vibe. Food prices were a bit intimidating, but the portions were significant enough to share among a group. The wait staff was attentive and did not rush us through our visit. There's nothing flashy about the place. But the solid food, service and drink offerings would encourage a long, leisurely visit. Impressions: For starters, we ordered beef sweetbreads, which had a slightly crispy exterior but were tender and in no way chewy. Chips and three versions of warm salsa were served. Each salsa had nice flavor and just the right amount of heat. As an entrée, we decided on a combination plate served with cabrito (goat meat) and ch

Beto's Alt-Mex

Why visit:

We've been shaking it up in SA since 1997. Born down in Southtown right next to our good friends at La Tuna, we started to introduce a new kind of food to our great Tex Mex city. Cooking it fresh and just a little healthier---digging down a little further south to serve up the best empanadas in the free world. We figured we better do up some tacos too... something familiar to our friends and family. We start 'em off with fresh handmade corn tortillas, and to kick it up a notch, we cooked up some Tacos al Pastor and the first fish tacos in SA-- drizzled with our "better than..." poblano sauce. People started coming. At first, they thought we had lost our minds because everybody knows SA is the home of Tex Mex, but as more and more folks tried our Alternative, they found they liked it. So now, over 17 years strong, we're proud to be a little part of the local food scene in SA. We are happy you're ready to step outside the box and get some ALT-MEX in you. Our goal i

Japanese Tea Gardens

Why visit:

The Japanese Tea Garden has a glorious history of over 90 years, from the time it was an operating rock quarry to today, as one of the most loved, educational and cultural resources in San Antonio. The quarry was shaped into a complex that included walkways, stone arch bridges, an island and a Japanese pavilion. The garden was termed the lily pond, and local residents donated bulbs to beautify the area. Exotic plants were provided by the City nursery and the City Public Service Company donated the lighting system. The pavilion was roofed with palm leaves from trees in City parks. The San Antonio Parks Foundation completed infrastructure rehabilitation to the facility, to include walkways, piping, filtration, wall repairs, and pond sealing. The restored garden features a lush year-round garden and a floral display with shaded walkways, stone bridges, a 60-foot waterfall and ponds filled with Koi.

Corner Bakery

Why visit:

On a Corner. That’s Where it Started. Inspired by great fresh ingredients, our small neighborhood bakery on a corner in downtown Chicago began creating artisan breads and freshly baked sweets. And upon a little success, neighbors began to ask us for sandwiches made with that fabulous bread, followed by homemade soups and salads, and even made-to-order scramblers. Our guests’ requests continued to inspire us as our bakery’s menu and business grew. Today, we continue to fulfill the needs and desires of our neighbors with a menu of ingredient-inspired, prepared-to-order food. When you visit our cafe, you’ll see real kitchens in place of assembly lines. You’ll hear the chopping of over 40 types of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, and the sizzle of our real panini grill. You’ll see the stove’s open flame and feel the warmth from our ovens working all day long. They’re the traditions we established years ago that we still passionately follow today.

Phil Hardberger Park

Why visit:

This 330-acre former dairy farm is one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels in San Antonio, an oasis surrounded by subdivisions, freeways and shopping centers. It is a stunning landscape, with some of its trees having stood here since the Battle of the Alamo. With extensive community input, a design team led by Stephen Stimson Associates developed an award-winning master plan for the park that is today only partially completed. Future phases will make more of this majestic property accessible to the public and add features such as a bridge to connect both sides of the park. Hardberger Park helps distinguish San Antonio as one of the great livable cities of North America, one that values open space and invests in the preservation of our landscape and heritage.

Golden Wok Chinese Restaurant

Why visit:

In 1972, Connie Andrews dreamed of owning her own small Chinese restaurant. It didn’t matter that she was not Asian, had no cooking experience and had never cooked on a Chinese stove before. What she had was determination, persistence, faith and the willingness to work 18-hour days. Her dreams became a reality on September 7, 1972, when her first Golden Wok restaurant opened in San Antonio.  After struggling on a shoestring budget for the first two years, Connie’s long days and determination paid off as the restaurant began to gain popularity.  Kenneth Lau joined Golden Wok in 1974 and became a partner in 1976.  The second Golden Wok location opened later that same year on Fredricksburg Road. A third Golden Wok location opened in 1987 on Wurzbach Road in San Antonio, featuring authentic Asian cuisine and the city’s only dim sum house. Thirty years later, Golden Wok remains a San Antonio dining destination, famous for its fresh, handmade daily selection of traditional

Walk-in visitors are invited to enjoy a self-guided tour, while scheduled groups of 15 of more are taken on docent-led tours and offered the chance to hear from a local Holocaust survivor. Visitors will learn about the Holocaust through three primary exhibits. Our Memorial begins with the Nazi rise to power, and includes examples of the hateful video and print propaganda common to the day. Photographs, films, artifacts, and maps continue the story, bringing to life the 12 years of Nazi rule across Europe, and tracing the incremental steps that led to extermination in the killing fields and death camps. This includes a Torah Scroll on permanent loan from the Westminster Synagogue in London.

Vida Mia Mexican Cuisine

Why visit:

Reminiscing about our childhood brings back aromas and sounds of our own home, and especially those from that of the kitchen, where our mother spent long hours, first off the smell covered the basic needs of a family of six children, then thanks to her fondness for pastry, she added the sweet touch of home which was personal and unlike any house in the neighborhood. Eating well was to enjoy the natural benefits of the nutrition such as maize, wheat, flour, raw milk, brown sugar, natural bee honey, and the immense variety of fruits and vegetables from our land. The love of cuisine and possessing a good appetite never failed, we managed not only the experience of traditional family recipes, but some of them that were family owned for several generations, such as pork chorizo, a unique beef jerky which is very special and different from that found in the regular market, preserved fruits and desserts for the holidays, but also the boldness to try new recipes and give one’s taste buds,

Bill Miller Bar-B-Q

Why visit:

In 1950, on a $500 loan from his father, Bill Miller opened a small poultry and egg business. Three years later Bill Miller Bar-B-Q began as a small fried chicken-to-go restaurant. Fried chicken led to hamburgers and then to barbecue. The second restaurant opened in February of 1963. Today there are 69 Bill Miller Bar-B-Q restaurants. From the beginning, Bill Miller Bar-B-Q was a family business. Faye Miller served as a cashier and hostess while raising their four children. The children learned how to work and were raised learning the operations of the business. They worked in the restaurant during the summers and on weekends. When Bill Miller planned a vacation to Europe between Balous Miller's junior and senior years of college, Balous ran the restaurant business that summer and then decided to make Bill Miller Bar-B-Q his career rather than pursuing his plans for teaching school. Bill Miller semi-retired upon Balous' graduation in May of 1966. As his brothers, John and Douglas rec

La Hacienda de Los Barrios

In 1979, Viola Barrios bet everything on a last hope for her family - a restaurant named Los Barrios. She made it a San Antonio tradition through her love for family, hard work, and a passion for the best Casero-style Mexican food. Why visit:

The restaurant founded in 1946 by Alfred F. Beyer, sits on land first granted title in 1777 by the King of Spain. The Spanish Colonial period hacienda became the core of the new business. The cedar door and window lintels, the fireplace, and thick rock walls, are still evident inside the building. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business to open its doors to the River and take advantage of the River's setting. Canoes, gondolas, and paddle boats, evolving into tour and dinner boats, began here and helped create the Riverwalk of today.
