Guidelet: The City of Gold

A travel guide to Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa | Target Market: Families, Friends, Fishermen, Holiday Makers, Clubbers, Backpackers, Jetsetters, Business People | A travel guide by: Guanita Kotze

South Africa is known for its warm weather and great holiday destinations. It is a modern country with all the luxury you would expect from a 5 star holiday, while still offering a distinct African experience. The cultural diversity of the people and the bright traditional clothes they wear has earned the locals the nickname of the rainbow nation. If you go looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow you will find Egoli, city of gold as JHB is also called. Most travelers will pass through at least once during a trip to South Africa because most flights connect there. Jozi as the locals love to call this city is the biggest in the world not navigable by water and claims to be the lightning capital of the world. The city is a cultural bouquet with a rich history to dig into. If you happen to find yourself in the city, here are a few places that will help make it a more memorable experience.
The City of Gold", a travel guide to Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Summary of points of interest in this travel guide to Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

Absa Art Gallery

Why visit:

Absa Towers North is situated in downtown Jozi as the locals call it, and there are many incomparable works of art in the offices and reception areas. There is a smaller art gallery which houses spectacular original art of artists who have entered Absa's prestigious, annual fine art competition. Some of the artworks that made a huge impression on me was the six storey tall colourful tuft carpet banners woven by rural men and an 11 metre highwire sculpture of carved African stools that weighs half a ton. Look out for the huge model of the old city of Johannesburg and the modern city displayed on two floors of space. It moves slowly making a cycle every 20 minutes.

The Orlando Towers played a significant role in Soweto's history. To mark this, the west tower has been painted to reflect the famous sons and daughters of Soweto, as well as traditional township scenes.
