Marjorie Eaton: Her Life In Pictures2019-11-20 11:00:00

Marjorie Eaton first arrived in Taos, NM in 1928.

Eaton said, “I realized I had found my soul when I arrived in Taos.”

This will be the first exhibition to focus on Marjorie Eaton’s vast portfolio of work, not only as a modernist painter, but also as a photographer and actress. The show will also provide an unprecedented glimpse into Eaton’s personal life through never before seen letters, photographs and personal effects. Don’t miss this special opportunity to intimately experience this pioneering female artist whose efforts from the early twentieth century and beyond continue to resonate today.

Support for Marjorie Eaton: Her Life In Pictures provided by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Museum Education Trust.

Dolichovespula Maculata: Works of Paper by Dianne Frost2019-11-20 10:00:00

Dianne Frost is an artist that is forever curious about the natural world, she is continually finding inspiration in fragments of nature. By close inspection and reflection, Dianne has been inspired to create and share something unusual or surprising with her art. This body of work is based on her backyard discovery of a hornet’s nest. Upon examination of the nest, Dianne became fascinated with the beautiful paper created by these creatures and proceeded to peel the paper layer by layer. Further research revealed that they were Baldfaced hornets (Dolichovespula Maculata). Many of the pieces in this series capture the whorl of the nest construction. The body of work strives to reflect for the viewer the inherent beauty of these beasts as conveyed by materials evoking the hornet’s nest.

Embroidered History: Colchas and the Stitch that Defined a Region2019-11-20 00:00:00

Spanning continents and centuries, the Northern New Mexican colcha is a journey of craft, culture, and geopolitics that is defined by the hands of New Mexican women.  Colchas are embroidered textiles or blankets whose origins have been traced as far back as the 16th century when New Mexico was New Spain, and expeditions packed with Iberian textiles were making their way up the Rio Grande Valley.

The 20th century saw a resurgence of the colcha tradition, with a combination of traditional and modern techniques and materials. The styles and patterns also adjusted, as works were created for sale as much as for ‘fine art,’ to be sold at Spanish Market and collected at local museums.

The colchas in this exhibition are from the museum’s collection, borrowed from a local collection and from the New Mexico Museum of Art.
