Why Go: Situated on the out skirts of the Agra City, Sikandra is the mausoleum of Akbar. Akbar was the greatest of the Mughal emperors, great patron of the arts, literature, philosophy and science, and one of the most secular royalties of his time. Akbar started building his own mausoleum which is a unique blend of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain architectural styles. It was completed by his son Jahangir. The decoration on the gateways is strikingly bold, with large mosaic patterns set into it. Built of red sandstone, the minarets are inlaid with white marble polygonal patterns.
