Why Go: This theatre is named after the late talented actress and founding patron of the Johannesburg Repertory Players, Muriel Alexander. The Alexander Theatre opened its doors in 1951. In the years following its opening Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was seen here for the first time ever and other plays like West Side Story, various Shakespear plays, Cry the Beloved Country and Ipi Ntombi (the story of a mine worker told in song and dance) graced the stage. During 1997 - 2007 the area was notoriously dangerous, but thanks to the revamp of the inner city in preparation to the 2010 Fifa World Cup this theatre is still servicing the community and visitors with entertaining plays
