Why Go: Expect displays that show urban life in Johannesburg and its place in South Africa's complex history. Themes vary and include work as a gold miner, living in a shack and the popular township jazz. A remarkable display of the 1956 Treason Trial tells us more about Nelson Mandela and 155 others that were imprisoned at the Johannesburg Fort and acquitted of treason after four years. Other exhibits include displays that depict stone and iron age communities and San rock art in a reconstructed shelter. Also, the lifestyle of the first white settlers in the Johannesburg area
