Why Go: The St. Nikolai Memorial is an architectural as well as an historic landmark of Hamburg city. The church which was once one of the five Lutheran churches in Hamburg is now a ruin which is a grim reminder of the Second World War. The elevator besides the church spire takes you to the top from where you can see most of the sprawling city that Hamburg is. The plaques in and around the church, which is also a museum, educate the visitors about the devastating effects of the war.
